On 10 and 11 November a severe storm hit the Kerch Strait, located between Ukraine in the west and Russia in the east and linking the Sea of Azov in the north to the Black Sea in the south. Many vessels ignored the Ukranian severe weather warning and found themselves in very rare sea and weather conditions for this region. These conditions caused serious damage to around ten vessels, most of which were anchored. At least 4 sailors are known to have died and 19 others were reported missing. The total amount of oil spilt was estimated at 1, tonnes of heavy fuel oil, 2. During the days following the incident, the weather conditions remained unfavourable, making spill response operations difficult, especially at sea. The first actions on land mainly consisted of shoreline surveys and manual recovery operations in less exposed areas. According to the Marine Coordination Emergency and Rescue Center in Kerch, on 21st November, more than people from the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergencies and civilian volunteers were involved in shoreline clean-up, as well as 30 surveillance vessels and 15 vessel cleaning units. The quantity of waste recovered was around 1, tonnes in Ukraine and 13, tonnes in Russia. Through response operations, around tonnes of heavy fuel oil was recovered and approximately 70, tonnes of oiled waste sand, oil, debris and vegetation was removed to be disposed of in Russia and 6, in Ukraine.

This paper examines archaeological data from the northern coast of the Black Sea to evaluate the possibility of using them as sea-level indicators for the past years. Despite the widespread presence of submerged cultural remnants, limitations in the use of geoarchaeological indicators are related to the disturbance of cultural layers by wave action and currents, and the scarcity of harbour remains. The review of existing data from various sites shows the presence of submerged cultural layers that did not exceed 2.
Interest in palaeoenvironments at the time of Greek colonization of the Black Sea coast has led to special attention being paid to a speculated 1 st millennium BC regression. There are numerous difficulties in reconstructing RSL changes since antiquity. Small sandy barriers have only been preserved in the inner part of semi-isolated gulfs and limans e.
On several coastal stretches of the Black Sea, coastline progradation during the subsequent period has buried beach ridges beneath younger coastal sediments. Unfortunately, such coastal archives are not widespread. In light of this, various indirect indicators, mainly lithological, must be used to reconstruct sea-level changes. For example, the absence of widespread peat layers has been overcome using relict beach and nearshore facies, although these have significant vertical error bars.

Kerch: An ancient city with a modern spirit
The bridge over the Kerch Strait or the Crimean Bridge with 19 km of parallel highway and double-track railroad is the longest in Russia and in Europe. Its construction started in February and as soon as May 16, the highway was officially opened. The builders crew — more than 10 thousand people from different regions of Russia — managed to finish the automobile part half a year ahead of schedule.

Slavyanskaya Compressor station: the main construction and installation works of stage 2. Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the builders of the Crimean bridge commemorative medals. Main works on the second line of “Gryazovets — Slavyanskaya CS” section completed. Client: Taman Federal Highway Agency. This transport bridge crossing over the Kerch Strait is the longest bridge in Europe and one of the largest structures of its kind in the world.
The two parallel bridges — one a four-lane motor road and one a double-track railway — link the Crimean coast and the Taman Peninsula, passing over stretches of open water and running along Tuzla Island and the Tuzla Spit. Opening the crossing helped ensure reliable communication between the Russian mainland and the peninsula, including deep sea ports. This development enhanced investment and tourism opportunities in the region.
An arched navigable span meters long and 35 meters high is installed above the Kerch-Yenikale Canal, a maritime shipping path. The path and design for the crossing were selected based on multiple factors, such as the presence of mixed heterogeneous soils in the seabed, seismic activity and environmental considerations.
The Kerch Explosion and Dynamic Data
Founded in the 6th century bc by Miletan Greeks, it flourished as a trading centre, and in the 5th century it became the capital of the kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus. Later a part of the Roman Empire, Panticapaeum suffered severely from barbarian invasions and was devastated by the Huns in ad After a checkered history, it was ceded by the Mongols to the Genoese in It was then known as Korchev Italian: Cerco, or Cerchio , from which the present name was derived.
In the 15th century Kerch passed to the Turks, who lost it to the Russians in Kerch was a transshipment point for cargoes entering the Sea of Azov.

Few places in Russia can boast of prehistoric origins. But in Kerch, archeologists have found fossils from the Paleolithic period, some dating back , years. In addition, they discovered the remains of stone tools, suggesting that Neanderthals inhabited the region. A mammoth tooth was also among the finds. The first settlement sprung up here in BC, when Greeks from the Caria region of modern Turkey founded the city of Panticapaeum.
Scholars believe that it was a fairly large Greek colony with an imposing Acropolis dedicated to Apollo. The ruins of Panticapaeum survive to this day. Around the city were built a necropolis and several hill mounds with the tombs of Scythian kings, whom the Greeks entrusted to rule their colony. Nineteenth-century archeologists found a vast trove of Scythian gold in the tombs, which is now on display at the largest museums of Russia and Europe.
Emperor Justinian I built new cities on the peninsula; Panticapaeum was renamed Bosporus and restored to its former glory.

What is the real need of Crimea? Is it a bridge or a tunnel? While bridge engineers are defending a bridge strait crossing as a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, effective, picturesque and inexpensive solution from their viewpoint , the tunnel engineers argue in the opposite direction, promoting the tunnel option as the safest, most reliable and the most durable of engineering structures.
The bridge option, undoubtedly, has a lot of advantages, while at the same time being the most vulnerable of structures to both natural hazards, such as thunderstorms, typhoons, earthquakes, and ice drifts, and to terrorist attacks or local military conflicts. The above factors encourage further comparison between bridge and tunnel solutions proposed for the Kerch Strait crossing. The idea of a transport crossing of the Kerch Strait dates back a long time.

We present a numerical model of the dynamics of the Kerch Strait allowing one to perform the coordinated analysis of the fields of currents and wind waves. The model includes the spectral wave module and the hydrodynamic block of currents. The influence of waves on the currents is taken into account in the hydrodynamic block both via the surface and bottom tangential stresses and via the radiation stresses.
In order to take into account the inverse influence of currents upon the waves, we use the fields of currents and sea level from the hydrodynamic block in the wave module. The specific features of the structure of currents and wind waves in the strait are studied for the typical wave situations.

Kerch Strait incident
It later constructed the Crimean Bridge across the strait. Under a treaty , the strait and the Azov Sea are intended to be the shared territorial waters of both countries, and freely accessible. As the flotilla, which consisted of two gunboats and a tugboat, approached the Kerch Strait, the Russian coast guard said they repeatedly asked the Ukrainian vessels to leave what they referred to as “Russian territorial waters”.
They said that the vessels had not followed the formal procedure for passage through the strait, that the Ukrainian ships had been manoeuvring dangerously, and that they were not responding to radio communications. As they neared the bridge, the Russians authorities placed a large cargo ship under it, blocking their passage into the Azov Sea. The Ukrainian ships remained moored in the strait for eight hours, before turning back to return to port in Odessa.

Link to original story on Jamestown website. After illegally annexing Crimea in , Russia declared it would build a mile-long road-and-rail bridge across the Kerch Strait, connecting mainland Russia to the occupied Crimean Peninsula. And last year , with construction underway, Moscow officials promised that the building of this massive bridge would “in no way limit [maritime] navigation in the Kerch-Enikalsk Channel [a deeper, navigable portion of the Kerch Strait, linking the Black and Azov Seas], ensuring free passage for vessels both during the construction phase and in the period of use” RIA Novosti , February 19, But instead of holding to this pledge, freedom of passage via the Kerch Strait—which in fact is protected by international law—is now at serious risk due to Russian actions.
In May, Moscow revealed the new maximum dimensions of ships allowed to pass through the Strait: due to the unique construction features of the Kerch Bridge, to cross underneath vessels can be no more than meters long, 31 meters wide and 33 meters tall, with a draft of up to 8 meters Ports. And this past August, Russia for the first time fully closed the Kerch Strait on account of the bridge work, citing construction requirements while it fitted the central arches on the structure Bsamp.
Officially, Russia pre-emptively declared that maritime passage across the Strait would be closed for 23 non-consecutive days in August—September Cfts. But the Ukrainian government never gave its blessing for the project.
